GREENBELT, MD - Reverend Bobby Lee Wood of Greenbelt, MD, formerly of West Virginia, entered into the eternal presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 15, 2019. Born on January 2, 1937 in Caldwell, WV, he is preceded in death by his parents, Simon J.P. Wood and Mildred Hefner Wood. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ruby Mae Rhodes Wood.
He is survived by his sisters Wanda Giles of Charleston, WV, and Betty Morgan of Ronceverte, WV, and sons Chuck (Janice) Wood of Greenbelt, MD, Rev. Mark (Sherry) Wood of Spencer, WV, and his daughters Lori (John) Meadows of Lynchburg, VA, and Lisa (Randy) Williamson of Friendly, WV. In addition, he is survived by 8 grandchildren: Sydney, Nathaniel, Victoria (Adam), Jonathan, Jeremy (Shanna), Deidre, Amanda, and Caitlin, and 8 great grandchildren, as well as many nephews and nieces.
Bobby was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Argonaut as a Petty Officer 2 nd class beginning in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1959. He was licensed to preach in 1963 by the First Baptist Church of Dunbar under the ministry of Rev. George R. Pauley. He was ordained into the gospel ministry in 1966 at the First Baptist Church of Chesapeake and served as pastor to churches in Chesapeake, WV, Huntington, WV, Raleigh, NC, Montgomery, WV, Sistersville, WV, and Lynchburg, VA. He also served as an Area Minister for the West Virginia Baptist Convention from 1988-1997 and while in this position, founded the School of Christian Studies and served as mentor to many pastors in the state. In his retirement, he taught many Bible studies and workshops throughout West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.
Visitations will be held Monday, March 18, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at The Parchment Valley Conference Center, Matherly Room, 1715 Lower Parchment Valley Road, Ripley, WV 25271 and on Tuesday, March 19, from 6-8pm at Morgan Funeral Home – 252 Montvue Drive, Lewisburg, WV 24901. Celebration of Bobby’s life will be held Wednesday, March 20, at 11am at the Morgan Funeral Home Chapel, Lewisburg, WV. Family will also receive guests an hour prior to the service, Wednesday.
Officiating the service will be long-time friends Dr. James Lutz, Dr. Lloyd Hamblin and Dr. Mike Sisson, Executive Minister of the West Virginia Baptist Convention.
