Charles Crump

Charles Daniel Crump passed peacefully from  this life into life eternal on April 29, 2025, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 2, 1932, in Paint Bank, West Virginia, he was the fourth child of Russell and Loraine Crump.

He was educated in the Monroe County school system and attended Bolling High School in Lewisburg, WV. Charles was drafted into the U.S. Army and served honorably during the Korean War. After returning home, he settled in Roanoke, Virginia, where he began working.

It was at John Wesley United Methodist Church that he met the love of his life, Mary Chambers Crump, who caught his attention as she sang in the choir. They were married on his birthday in 1958 during a snowstorm—a story he loved to tell. The couple later moved to Charleston, where Charles worked for Pauff and Smith Ready Mix as a driver for 35 years.

Charles was a devoted member of Simpson Church, where he served faithfully as a trustee and sang in the men’s choir. He continued giving back by helping maintain the church well into his 80s, working alongside his best friend, Charles Curry. The Charles’ were known for their tireless service and kind hearts.

A man of deep faith, Charles cherished the farm where he was raised and found joy in the outdoors. He was known for his generosity, quiet strength, and willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. He shared stories of his life and upbringing with warmth and humor and was especially famous for his love of sweets—earning him the title “The Candy Man.” His daily visits to Valley Bell for a candy bar and a vanilla milkshake with extra syrup became a beloved ritual.

Tall in stature and in spirit, Charles stood out wherever he went. His bright smile, gentle nature, and warm welcome made everyone feel like family. Affectionately called “Sack” by those closest to him, and “Grandad” by his granddaughter’s friends, “Uncle Sack” to others, Charles left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Loraine Crump; his brothers, Lewis, John, David, and Walter; and his sisters, Helen and Grace.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 68 years, Mary Chambers Crump; beloved granddaughter, Dr. Sharletta Green; sister, Edith Boggs; brother, Jarnelle Crump (Liz); and a host of nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and treasured friends.

His legacy of love, faith, kindness, and joy will live on in all who were blessed to know him.

Homegoing service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the John Wesley United Methodist Church, 208 E. Foster Street – Lewisburg, WV 24901.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, Saturday at the church.  Burial will follow the service in the Lewisburg-Bolling Cemetery, Court Street N., Lewisburg, WV.  The family wishes to thank Hospice Care for their care, support, and love during his brief illness. The Physical Therapist team at Center Well, and the caregivers from Visiting Angels. Each of you played an important role in Charles, Mary, and Sharletta’s life and we are eternally grateful for your presence.
