Danny Ralph Shafer, 73, of Chestnut Flats, West Virginia, passed away at his home that he built, on January 15, 2026. He was born on October 21, 1952 at the old homeplace in Smoot, West Virginia, to Kenna Rufus Shafer and Ruth Faye Allen Shafer.
Danny was a construction worker earlier in life, having worked on the tunnel at Back Creek, VA (East River Mountain Tunnel), The Capital Beltway (I-495) encircling Washington, D.C., the Maryland Cup Factory in Baltimore and the Surry County Power Station in Virginia, among others. After injuring his back, Danny transitioned into crafting and artisanship. He worked with fabric, crocheting rugs and baskets, knitted sweaters and textiles with Appalachian by Design, and later wove copper wire into jewelry, animals, trees, crosses and other unique pieces. He loved to vend at events and often won ‘best artisan’ awards. Some markets and events he would attend ranged from Blacksburg, VA, Monterey, VA, Hinton, WV, Pence Springs, WV, Roanoke, VA, Elkins, WV, the State Fair of West Virginia, and many others.
Danny loved to play guitar and pick music. He loved to wander the mountains around Chestnut Flats, Burns Run and Spice Run, on over towards Williamsburg, scouting for ginseng and golden root. He had a sensitive and kind heart and loved all living creatures.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Steve Michael Shafer and Kenna Rufus Shafer, Jr.
Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Yevette Marlane Shafer, his loyal companion (Australian Shepherd) Peanut Butter, his two cats Bobby and Midnight; his loving daughters Sonya Michelle Shafer and Danielle Renee Hawkins, Danielle’s husband Sam and their two daughters Heather and Kira; his sister Carolyn Shawver and her husband Bill and their three children, and his brother Scott Allen Shafer and his wife Tiffany and daughter Taylor.
Danny will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. May he be rejoicing in being reunited with those who have been waiting for him in Heaven.
