Dennis Ray Carter, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on April 9, 2026, at LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. Born on April 23, 1955, in Fort Spring, West Virginia, Dennis lived a life marked by dedication, warmth, and a spirited personality that endeared him to all who knew him.
A 1973 graduate of Greenbrier East High School, Dennis dedicated more than three decades of his professional life as the Sales Manager of Alleghany Motors in Covington, where he was respected for his leadership and commitment to excellence. Beyond his career, Dennis was known for his vibrant sense of humor—silly, fun, and entertaining—coupled with a thoughtful and loving nature that revealed the depth of his big heart.
Dennis’s passions reflected his zest for life. He enjoyed horses, the thrill of making golf carts go fast, an appreciation for classic cars, an avid Dale Earnhardt fan, and was a devoted fan of WVU Mountaineers football, sharing these interests with family and friends alike.
He is survived by his cherished wife of thirty-six years, Martha Sue Morris Carter; his children, Steven Carter and his wife Kasey, Angie Carter, and Katie Elmore and her husband Scotty; as well as his brother Joe Carter and Tammy. Dennis was also a proud grandfather to Carter Woodson, Layla Sheets, Maddie Sheets, Kendall Kegley, and Gatlin Elmore. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends who will remember him fondly and miss him dearly.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Norma Carter; his brothers, Gary, Wayne, and Eddie Carter; and his sister, Candy Ballard. Their memories, along with his, remain a treasured part of the Carter family legacy.
