In Loving Memory of James Knapp Williams “Con”

James Knapp Williams “Con” age 92, of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, passed peacefully into eternal rest on April 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on December 29, 1933, to parents Gladus and Roxie Williams of White Sulphur Springs.

Con was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, and a faithful servant of the Lord. He was a longtime member of Greenbrier Valley Baptist Church, where he played an important role in the church’s life. In the early 1970s, Con helped with the construction of the church and later served faithfully as a Deacon, chorus member, and Sunday School teacher. He also loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and most of all gardening. His greatest wish was to return to his garden, where he found peace and purpose.

For 66 years, Con was the beloved husband of Shirley “Riffle” Williams, sharing a lifetime built on love, faith, and unwavering devotion. Their story together was one filled with affection, laughter, and treasured memories. Con often fondly recalled their early years, especially the times when Shirley’s sister, Judy May, tagged along on their dates—stories he shared with a smile and great fondness. Judy held a special place in Con’s heart, and these memories reflected the close family bonds he cherished.

Con proudly served his country in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Corporal and serving for two years plus four years in the reserves. He was a veteran of the Korean War and carried great pride in his service. Following his military service, Con dedicated 38 years of employment to the White Sulphur Springs Nursery, where he was known as “Chief” and for his strong work ethic and pride in a job well done. Con frequently shared memories of his time in the military with his grandchildren, offering stories marked by humility, humor, and gratitude for his fellow servicemen.

Con especially treasured his role as Grandpa and Great Grandpa. His face lit up when surrounded by his grandchildren, and he took immense pride in watching his greatgrandchildren grow. His gentle guidance, warm humor, and steady presence created memories that will be held dear for generations.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley “Riffle” Williams; his son, Duane Williams and wife Leatha Williams; his grandchildren, Garrett Williams and wife Jessie Williams, granddaughter Karessa Thompson and husband Chase Thompson and grandson Jordan Williams; and his brother, Jack Williams and sister-in-law Juanita Williams. Con was the loving GreatGrandpa to six greatgrandchildren: Axel Williams, Thorin Williams, Brier Williams, and Ember Williams, children of Garrett and Jessie Williams; and Camden Thompson and Koleson Thompson, children of Karessa and Chase Thompson. He is also survived by extended family members and many dear friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Williams and Eddie Williams, and his sisters, Catherine Steele, Libby Huddleston, Marie Casto and Abby Vance. Though deeply missed, his family finds comfort in the promise of eternal life and the assurance that he has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
