Kenneth Calvin Harrison

October 9, 1926 — December 5, 2024

Kenneth Calvin Harrison (“Calvin” to family, “Ken” to co-workers), 98, passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, December 5, 2024, in Roanoke, VA. Born October 9, 1926, in Tazewell County, VA, he was the son of the late Thomas and Polly Harrison. Calvin grew up in Renick, WV, attending a one-room schoolhouse before continuing to high school in Frankford and Renick.

After serving in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War, Calvin earned a bachelor’s degree in forestry from West Virginia University. He worked as a logger in Oregon during his college summers before dedicating 30 years (1956–1986) to the U.S. civil service as a forester. His career service ranged from the mountains of Virginia to the coast of North Carolina, where he received the North Carolina Wildlife Federation’s Governor’s Conservation Achievement Award.

In 1955, Calvin married Thelma Zola Altizer, and together they shared 69 years of love and partnership, building a life rooted in family and mutual respect. Calvin and Thelma raised three sons while creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished memories. Thelma was his steadfast companion and the center of his life until his passing.

Calvin is survived by his wife Thelma; daughter Coleen (“Conie”) from his first marriage (spouse Jerry); three sons and their spouses, Ken (Gail), Jon (Rhonda), and Don (Melody); as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three older brothers Quinton, Joe Beavers (“JB”), and Bill, and three younger sisters Janet, Betty, and Martha. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Calvin found immense happiness in the outdoors, whether fishing, hunting, gardening, or traveling. His passion for nature and conservation was not just a career but a lifelong calling that he clearly manifested.
