LEWISBURG, WV – Kenneth Jeffries Sherman, 75 of Lewisburg, WV passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. Ken was born in New York on November 24, 1946, to Shirley and Lawrence Sherman. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Phil Damiano, in Los Angeles, alongside his sister Mindy Damiano. In his 20s, he returned to New York to pursue photography and political activism, and to make many lifelong friendships.
During this time, he helped raise his son, Seth Sherman, and stepdaughter, Erica Soehngen. In the 1980s, Ken found his home in the West Virginia hills, making his mark on the vibrant community of the Greenbrier Valley. He loved the natural beauty of the state and fought to protect it, documenting the environmental devastation created by mountaintop removal. A professional photographer, a storyteller, and a musician, Ken made many friends through his art. He considered himself quite the comedian and connected with others through his humor and love of a good time. With Kelly Kemp, he had two daughters, Sophie, and Marguerite, who they raised in Lewisburg. He described raising his girls as the best years of his life.
He was good-natured, big-hearted, creative, and kind. Ken was loved by many for the ease of his company and his passion for wanting the world to be a better place.
We honor him by staying connected to friends and family, making music and art, and spreading his love, laughter, and lively spirit. A memorial service is being planned for a later date. Online guestbook can be signed at
