Mary Marshall Pence, 93, formerly of Second Creek, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026, at her home in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Mary was born in Second Creek, WV, on March 23, 1933. She was blessed to be one of 17 children and was raised on the family farm. Her father was a sawyer, while her mother cared for the family and tended the farm. From an early age, Mary was a hard worker and a wonderful example to her brothers and sisters. Among her many chores were milking the cows and rising early to prepare breakfast for her father.

Mary learned to play the piano at a young age and regularly played during weekly church services. Her parents instilled in her a deep and lasting love for God and family, a foundation that remained at the heart of her life.

That strong work ethic continued throughout her years as a wife and mother. Mary held various jobs before completing her training as a cosmetologist. Through the years, she shared her love for others through her kind and genuine words, her wonderful sense of humor, and the personal care she provided while washing, cutting, and styling their hair. Her sincere love for people was evident to everyone she served.

Mary had an infectious smile that could light up a room. She was a devoted and loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. To her growing family, she was lovingly known as “Maw-Maw.”

Mary loved children and treasured spending time with her family. She often expressed her love by preparing a wonderful meal for her family to enjoy or by giving thoughtfully chosen gifts. She had a special gift for making everyone feel loved and important, always putting the needs of others before her own.

Above all, Mary loved God. Her faith was not simply something she professed; it was something she lived each day. Her love for the Lord was at the very heart of who she was, and she faithfully reflected that love to those around her.

As the effects of dementia began to affect her later in life, Mary only grew sweeter and became even more focused on loving God and the people around her. She would awaken each morning saying, “Glory to God,” and repeat those words many times throughout the day. She never complained. Instead, even in the midst of her declining health, she continued to reflect the love and character of Christ more and more until the day she went home to Heaven.

Mary will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Her memory and example will continue to inspire all who knew her to love God, love others, and especially to show kindness and compassion to those who are often overlooked.

Mary was the beloved daughter of the late Marshall and Mary Susan Ridgeway Boggs.

She is fondly remembered by her five children; Charlotte Spraggins, Roger Pence (Tamera), Gregory Pence (Amy), Christopher Pence (Laura) and Tracy Pence (Edwina).

She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren; Heather Weigum (Michael), Jessica Rollison (Curt), Sarah Graham (Chris), Hannah Levine (Julian), Justin Pence (Jaime), Ryan Pence (Julie), Josh Pence (Taylor), Jade Davis (Dalton), Jamie Pence, Neal Pence (Rachel), Lindsay Ritter (Wes) and Mackenzie Jett (Jordan).

She leaves behind 22 great-grandchildren; Jonah, Maddie, Coral, Margot, Juno, Landon, Brooklyn, Kenlee, John Luke, Hudson, Sailor, Jace, Josie, Brody, Emersyn, Kaya, Lyrica, Christopher, Hayden, Eleanor, Emmett and Jameson.

She is also survived by five great-great-grandchildren; Kolter, Della, Adalyn, Carsyn and Paytyn.

In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by eight brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by four siblings; Phyllis Scruggs of Roanoke, Virginia, Juanita Jewell of Verona, Virginia, Isabelle Fogus of Pulaski, Virginia and her brother, Clayton Boggs of Roanoke, Virginia.

Visitation for Mary will be held at Morgan Funeral Home, 252 Montvue Drive, Lewisburg, WV 24901, on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12:30 p.m., with Pastor Edward Wood, Jr. officiating. She will be laid to rest at Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Hokes Mill Road, Ronceverte, WV 24970.
